Maersk confirms 260 containers lost in Japan

Maersk confirmed that 260 containers fell overboard the Maersk ‘Eindhoven’ after the ship suffered an engine failure amid severe weather conditions near Japan on 17 February.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that there was an engine shutdown while maneuvering in rough seas. This led to a strong swing, causing the incident, the company explained in a statement.

“More details will be known as the studies continue and when the ship arrives at the port. At the moment, we cannot say anything about the possible delay of the containers that are on board”, informed Maersk.

The vessel was on its way from Xiamen, China, to Los Angeles, California, and is still in transit to Yokohama, Japan, where it is due to dock on March 1, according to the marine traffic platform.

“We are currently evaluating the nearest suitable port options in Asia to dock the ship. We will keep you informed about the decision on the location of the port and the time to better manage the unloading of the cargo”, explained the company.

Maersk also said that its representatives will contact customers to provide more details about the affected cargo, giving priority to calls to customers whose containers have been lost or suffered potential damage.
