Storm closed the ports of Itajaí and Navegantes for a few days last week

A subtropical storm that caused waves of up to 3 meters caused blockages in the access channels to the terminals in  Itajai and Navegantes. The access channels to the ports were closed on Wednesday morning (April 21) by the Navy for security. The cost of a stopped ship is US$ 35,000 to US$ 100,000 per day.

“We noticed that there was a big change in the surf, with waves reaching around 2.7 to 3 meters in the area near the external channel where we anchored the ships and also at the pilot embarkation and disembarkation points”, explained the director of Logistics Operations at the Port of Itajaí, Héder Cassiano Moritz.

This Sunday, it was possible to see that several ships entered the port and docked. The Marine Traffic website points out the moored vessels, as shown in the image below.

The most problematic issue is when there is a more extended period of closing this bar when we have a total interruption of the entry and exit of ships. This certainly makes it possible for cargo-handling patios to get backed up. This can be a little more problematic,” said the director.

In the long run, losses began to appear in the logistics chain, with possible delays in delivering goods. We were able to leverage the impact this time because the announced storm led to the reorganization of several maneuvers. The expectation is now for better times.

Storm and weather forecast

The storm was named “Potira” by the Brazilian Navy. NSC meteorologist Leandro Puchalski explains that the phenomenon occurs when a tropical or subtropical cyclone reaches the classification of a storm. According to the expert, this is the 12th that has occurred on the coast of Brazil since 2011.
