Yara and ABPA announce deal to expand winter crop cultivation

Fertilizer producer Yara announced it has signed a partnership with ABPA (the Brazilian animal protein association) to encourage and improve the planting of winter grains such as wheat, oats, and triticale in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
“The initiative is based mainly on the urgent demand from the animal protein industry, which uses cereal for poultry and pork feed. In a statement, Yara explained that the industry needs to import the cereals, but could replace it with domestic wheat, for example”.
With the rise in the price of corn and a possible corn shortage for the domestic market, the chairman of the ABPA Advisory Council, Francisco Turra, created the “Optimization of Winter Crops” movement. The project aims to encourage producers and organizations to expand the cultivation of wheat, barley, and triticale among inhabitants of the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
Based on data from FARSUL (the agriculture Federation of Rio Grande do Sul), the area to be planted this May with wheat and other winter crops may grow from 900,000 hectares to 1.4 million hectares in the state. “It is a question of sustainability, with benefits for the entire chain. The rural producer will increase his profitability and better use the land, while the agribusiness will not be dependent on just one input – thus mitigating the risk of a possible shortage”, states João Benetti, commercial director of Yara Brasil.
The project counts on the participation of other entities, such as EMBRAPA Trigo; FARSUL; FAESC; SENAR (RS); FECOAGRO (RS); OCERGS-SESCOOP (RS) SYSTEM; ASGAV; FUNDESA; ACAV; ACERGS; EMBRAPA Clima Temperado, from Pelotas (RS); EMBRAPA Pecuária Sul, from Bagé (RS); and EMBRAPA Swine and Poultry, from Concórdia (SC).
