Vale looking to reduce emissions with first-ever wind-powered ore carrier

In the coming days, Vale will receive the world’s first ore vessel equipped with rotor sails, which aim to increase efficiency and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, one of the mining company’s carbon cutting initiatives.
Port of Itaguai leads iron ore growth
Datamar shows that in the comparison of the first quarter of 2021 the number of vessel calls carrying iron ore grew considerably at the port of Itaguaí, rising from 70 in 2020 to 100 calls this year. In other ports, movement remained stable.

The VLOC type vessel, a Guaibamax, with a deadweight capacity of 325 thousand tons is also the largest in the world to be fitted with rotor sails. It is currently undergoing final adjustments before leaving China for Brazil, where it will load its first iron ore shipment.
