Brazil increases cotton exports, already totaling US$ 3.67 bi for 2020/21

Even with a month to go before the end of the 2020/21 crop year, Brazilian revenue from cotton exports is already 19.4% higher than that of the entire 2019/20 cycle, according to the Brazilian association of cotton producers (ABRAPA), which released cotton data up to June this Tuesday. Export volume grew 25%.

Between August of last year and June, exports of 2.34 million tons of cotton generated US$ 3.67 billion for Brazil. The organization adopts the export calendar also used by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), an international reference for the activity.

“Brazil once again sets a new record with still one month to go until the end of the 2020/2021 export season. The US$ 3.5 billion target has already been exceeded,” said Abrapa, in a note.

Among the main buyers of Brazilian cotton in the 2020/21 cycle are China, Vietnam, and Pakistan, with percentages of 31%, 17%, and 12%, respectively. Bangladesh and Turkey follow with 11% each. Sales of 718,000 tons to the Chinese have already set a new record.

Last month, exports totaled 100,600 tons, 77% more than in June 2020 – and the highest ever registered for the month of June. Revenue for the period was US$177 million.
