Week 202129

Figures released by Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) indicate that the Port of Rio de Janeiro, which celebrated its 111th anniversary on July 20th, has been showing an increasing annual average in cargo handling over the past five years, with an upward trend of 10.5% this year compared to last year. The analysis of the Port Authority’s Business Planning area also points out that the port’s revenue reached R$147.4 million in the 1st half of 2021, an increase of 14.8% compared to the 1st half of 2020.

According to the data in the report, the highest volumes of cargo handled by the Port of Rio de Janeiro in the period 2016-2021 (until June) were registered in December 2020, when 841,000 tons were moved, followed by June 2021, with 835,000 tons moved. The total cargo handled in the 1st half of 2021 amounted to 4.5 million tons. It was the best half on record since 2016. The main type of cargo handled at the port is containerized cargo, but it is worth highlighting the increases in the export of pig iron and the imports of wheat and steel products, in addition to the growing provision of special services such as maritime support to the offshore pre-salt bases.

2021 projection

The forecast for cargo handling at the Port of Rio de Janeiro suggests another record in cargo handling will be reached in 2021, given the level already reached in the first half of the year. “According to the pattern of cargo handling, we observe that the second half of every year in the period analyzed usually registers an increase in the volumes handled. If we consider a conservative projection of perpetuating the 1st semester average for the rest of the year, we can estimate around 9 million tons handled for 2021”, predicts the Director of Business and Sustainability at Docas do Rio, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva.
