On the 20th, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) confirmed a case of African swine fever in Haiti, the first since 1984. The country borders the Dominican Republic, which also registered a case of the disease in July.
After the new confirmation, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) reinforced the alert to prevent the entry of the virus into Brazil. In a statement, the organization reiterated that Haiti and the Dominican Republic are both located on an island, reducing the risk of land contamination. Even so, Brazil needs to redouble its attention to avoid the disease.
Since the Dominican Republic confirmed a case of African swine fever, the public and private sectors in Brazil have started an awareness campaign to prevent the virus from reaching the country and causing massive damage to the local swine industry. ABPA’s Special Group for the Prevention of African Swine Fever (Gepesa) is helping the Ministry of Agriculture intensify its health defense.
