US hurricane may limit glyphosate supply in Brazil, says Bayer

Bayer reported today (9/28) that Hurricane Ida, which passed through the United States a few weeks ago, affected the production of glyphosate in the country; this could have an impact on the supply of the herbicide Roundup in Brazil. In a note to customers, the German company said that the strong winds that reached 240 kilometers an hour affected the operations of its plant in Luling, Texas, which is mainly responsible for supplying raw material for the production of the pesticide.

In the letter, Bayer stated that it has provided support and emergency assistance to employees living in the affected region. The company recalls that the hurricane also damaged the electricity supply, the airport, railroads, and the port of New Orleans, Louisiana. “Electricity and other basic infrastructure necessary for the resumption of the unit are slowly coming back”, he says.

According to the multinational, there is still no date forecast for the normalization of work at the plant; this could affect the supply of glyphosate-based products destined for Brazil. The company said its subsidiary in the country is carrying out a mitigation plan to seek alternatives for customers.
