Importers Call for reduced import tax on hybrid and electric cars

Vehicle importers are in contact with the government to renew the ordinance that reduces the Import Tax (II) for hybrid and electric models brought in from countries outside the blocs that maintain trade agreements with Brazil. If this does not happen by the end of the year, the II rates for these vehicles will rise from the current range, which goes from zero to 7%, to 35%.
João Oliveira, president of ABEIFA (the association that represents importers) is optimistic. “The government is open; there is a perception that there must be a different regime for these vehicles”, highlighted the manager as he presented the balance of sales for the third quarter on Tuesday, October 5.
The Import Tax for electrified vehicles was reduced in 2016. The last ordinance that renewed the benefit was dated last year. The range of different rates for these models takes into account the energy efficiency of each one. Together with the government, ABEIFA has also defended a reduction of the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) for hybrids and electrics.
The market for cars powered by electricity — whether through exclusive charging from an outlet or, in the case of hybrids, with the help of a combustion engine— is still small. It represented just 1.64% of sales in the country between January and September.
On the other hand, the market for these vehicles has been expanding rapidly. In the nine-month period, it reached 24,100 units, an increase of 81.5% compared to the same period last year.
