The mining company Vale has once again begun shutting down operations at its Onça Puma nickel mine after the court accepted an appeal filed by the State of Pará and reinstated the suspension of its operating license, the company said in a statement on Monday.

Vale had halted operations at Onça Puma in October after SEMAS (the state secretariat for the environment and sustainability) suspended its license, alleging non-compliance with conditions.

A few days later, the mining company obtained a favorable decision in court, reestablishing its license and determining its immediate return to operations.

In Monday’s statement, Vale stressed that “it will continue to take the appropriate administrative and judicial measures, seeking to reverse the order to suspend the mine’s operations, which seems unfounded.”

The Pará state environmental department said on October 4 that the operating license was suspended for failure to comply with conditions, such as the availability of a health unit in the region and a fiber-optic structure in the municipalities of Ourilândia do Norte, Tucumã, Água Azul do Norte, Parauapebas, and São Félix do Xingu.
