China’s pork production reached its highest level in three years during the third quarter, as a result of investments being made by the country’s farmers, especially since 2020, to rebuild the country’s pig herd which was decimated by African swine fever.

According to Reuters, which cites data from the Chinese government, production reached 12.02 million tons between July and September, an increase of 43% compared to the same period last year. It was the third-best result for the quarter since 2018, before China began to feel the consequences of swine fever.

From January to September, the increase compared to the same period in 2020 was 38%, to 39.17 million tons, according to data from the statistics department of the Asian country highlighted by Reuters. Despite the advance, some analysts expected a bigger jump in the third quarter, to 13.46 million tons.

The rise in pork production was led by large breeders who invested billions of yuan in new farms during 2020 in an attempt to gain market share after the swine fever epidemic.
