Brazil increases rice exports despite logistics problems

Brazilian exports of rice (husk basis) gained momentum in September despite the difficulties that the rise in the price of sea freight imposed on foreign trade. According to a survey by ABIARROZ (the Brazilian rice industry association), based on figures from SECEX (the Ministry of the Economy’s foreign trade secretariat), rice exports totaled 130,250 tons last month, a growth of 66.6% over September 2020.
In the same comparison, imports decreased by 49%, to 79,150 tons. As a result, the trade balance for rice had a positive balance of 51,090 tons in the month. In September, the main buyers of Brazilian rice were Cuba (44,780 tons), Venezuela (32,270 tons), Senegal (2,560 tons), Sierra Leone (11,760 tons), and China (3,280).
According to the export manager at ABIARROZ, Carolina Telles Matos, the increase in global demand for rice and the intensification of promotional actions for the Brazilian Rice Project, which the association is developing in partnership with Apex-Brasil, contributed to high sales abroad last month.
Even so, adds Gustavo Trevisan, Director of International Affairs at ABIARROZ, the segment still faces adversity in the global market. He explains that the increase in sea freight prices has harmed rice exports, especially to markets that import higher value-added products, such as Peru and the United States.
“At the beginning of the year, the price of a container for Peru was US$ 1,000, and today the cost is US$ 7,500. In the same period, the value of the container for the US jumped from US$ 1,000 to around US$ 10,000”, says Trevisan, in a note.
