Svitzer and Maersk have reached an agreement to design the world’s first fuel-cell tug for port operations; the tug will be fueled using green methanol.

The project is based on a joint operation between Svitzer and Maersk with the aim of jointly exploring the combination of methanol fuel cells, batteries, storage systems, electric drives, and propulsion units as a carbon-neutral alternative to propulsion mechanisms.

According to Svitzer Director of Global Operations Ingrid Uppelschoten Snelderwaard, “fuel cells will apply as the primary propulsion force for tugboats rather than larger ships. In addition, it takes significantly less time to build a tug than it takes for larger ships such as container ships.”
