Argentina’s undersecretary for fisheries, Juan Bosh, has called for an urgent update of the sanctions for illegal fishing in Argentina. Last week’s arrest of a Korean flagged trawler fishing illegally in Argentina highlighted the need to change the value of fines which have been in place since 1998 and have suffered with the devaluation of the Argentine Peso.

Current fines range from five to ten million pesos and Bosh suggests raising the range to between 40 million Pesos and 80 million Pesos (approx US$1m to US$2m) as well as adjusting the sanctions with changes in purchasing power.
