The Santos Port Authority (SPA) held the evaluation meeting on December 6 for “Operation Taifa II”, an intensive inspection action in the Port of Santos that began on December 1 and ended on December 3rd. The objective was to verify irregularities in the management of waste generated by vessels and crews. ‘ ‘ “Taifa” is maritime jargon for garbage produced on ships.

SPA coordinated the group that included the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), International Agricultural Surveillance (Vigiagro), National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq), and the Brazilian Navy. In addition to identifying possible irregularities, the action aimed to raise awareness among shipowners, maritime agents, and service providers about the regulations in force in the Port of Santos and in Brazilian jurisdictional waters.

The teams inspected three cruise ships, two bulk carriers (one for vegetable cargo and the other for fertilizer), and two container ships. The inspection verified that passenger ships seek to meet international sustainability standards, with greater quality in the management of their waste. Issues were identified on the freighters which will require a more in-depth document analysis over the next few days.

Operation Taifa II will continue at the beginning of next year to verify the destination of waste collected from ships in the Port of Santos. At this stage, when other entities will participate in the activity, the entire waste route will be inspected, from its collection on ships to the treatment and reception units.
