One of the main changes the pandemic has brought about is the relationship between people and their homes. This scenario is especially positive for the furniture industry: Wilson Sons’ operations at Tecon Rio Grande have shown, in 2021, an increase of more than 50% in cargo exports compared to the previous year. That is, 9,568 TEU were handled, which corresponds to 88.6 tons. These figures indicate the largest volume handled by the terminal in 13 years.
Furniture exports increased by more than 55% this year: in terms of capital, it went from US$ 487.6 million, between January and October 2020, to US$ 757.3 million in the same period of 2021, according to the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), a subdivision of the Ministry of Economy. The Rio Grande do Sul State is responsible for 29.6% of total exports.
Total supply also grew in 2021. A study by the IEMI – market intelligence agency of the Brazilian Association of Furniture Industries (Abimóvel) – points to a 6.5% increase from January to November 2021, compared to the same period in 2020. The survey also showed that entrepreneurs in the sector have been investing in factory infrastructure and in hiring more labor, which reflects the optimism present in the sector.
Furniture shipment at Tecon Rio Grande is a weekly endeavor. The main destinations for furniture are the cities of London (United Kingdom), Houston (Texas), Cartagena (Colombia) and the Port of Callao (Peru).
