The State of Rio Grande do Sul concluded, on December 29, its first and only shipment of live calves this year. According to the Agriculture Department, 11,465 animals sailed from the port of Rio Grande heading to Egypt.
The operation began on the 27th, when the first animals left the Pre-Shipment Establishment (EPE), in the municipality of Cristal, to the Agriculture and Livestock Surveillance Unit (Uvagro) of the Ministry of Agriculture about 160 kilometers away. In total, 207 trips were required.
“We inspected the situation in the trucks and at the embarking to ensure no overcrowding”, claims the secretariat, in a statement issued to reinforce that the organization followed closely all procedures and carried out all the necessary sanitary inspections to guarantee animal welfare upon arrival at the port. The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for inspecting the embarkation on the ship.
The calves came from various properties in the state and were quarantined at the EPE for 21 days. The export director at Estância del Sur, Vinícius Pilz, claims that it took about three months to put the 11,000 live calves in the desired standard by the customer.
