The recovery in footwear exports seen over the past year continued in the first month of 2022. Data by the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados) indicate that 14 million pairs were shipped in January, generating US$ 101,2 million, representing increases both in terms of volume (+43.8 percent) and revenue (+66 percent) compared to the same month in 2021.
According to Haroldo Ferreira, executive president of Abicalçados, it is likely that growth rates will decrease throughout the year due to the stronger comparison base, particularly in the second half of the year. “In any case, there is a chance that shipments will increase by around 5% in 2022,” he adds.
The main destination for Brazilian footwear in January was the US, which accounted for more than 25% of total shipments. In the first month of the year, the Americans imported 1.75 million pairs for US$ 25.87 million, an increase in both volume (+85) and revenue (+93.6) compared to the same month of last year.
Argentina came in second among Brazilian footwear importers, with 778,000 pairs exported, generating US$ 6.65 million. France was the third most popular destination.
States
Rio Grande do Sul was Brazil’s top exporting state in January. In the month, the state’s factories shipped 3.4 million pairs, generating $44.7 million, an increase of 47.2 percent and 64.3 percent, respectively, over the first month of 2021.
The second-largest exporter in January was Ceará, where 6 million pairs came from, which generated US$ 30.44 million, increments of 50.5% and 70%, respectively.
São Paulo was the third-largest exporter in the first month of 2022 with increases of 41% in volume and 29.4% in revenue.
Finally, Paraíba appears as the fourth exporter in January. In the month, the factories in Paraíba shipped 1.86 million pairs.
