Paraguay says that there are only 5km left to complete Bioceanic Route

This Wednesday (9), Paraguay announced that only 5 km of asphalt are left to complete the Bioceanic Route. The pathway, which runs across the country from Carmelo Peralta on the Brazilian border to Loma Plata on the triple border of Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia, will provide access – including to Brazilian cargo leaving Mato Grosso do Sul – to Chilean ports.

The highway is expected to cut the travel time to the Port of Santos by 17 days. According to Juan Rivarola, the engineer in charge of the project, the stretch that is still missing corresponds to stretch 11. Following paving, road signs between stretches 11 and 12 will be installed, completing all the 20 stages that Rivarola previously stipulated for constructing the 277-kilometer highway.

The work is regarded as a watershed moment for Paraguay, particularly for the development of the Chaco region, in the department of Alto Paraguay, which had not a single meter of asphalt built before the start of the works in 2019.

The Chaco accounts for 163 of the 277 km-long highway. The project will also include an International Bridge, which will connect Carmelo Peralta, Paraguay, to Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso do Sul, funded by Itaipu Binacional.
