Brazil’s flow of fertilizer imports increased in the first quarter of the year, according to shipment figures released on Wednesday (April 6), as Western sanctions on key producers like Russia are expected to restrict the supply of fertilizers in April.
Fertilizers are critical to maintaining maize, soybean, rice, and wheat yields, while farmers in Brazil and elsewhere are struggling to cope with the increase in costs due to trade disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Check below the track record of Brazil’s fertilizer imports, as well as imports of chemical compounds used in the manufacture of fertilizers, from January 2020 to February 2022. Data are from DataLiner.

According to data from Cargonave, Brazilian imports of fertilizers in the first quarter increased by 27.4%.
Imports reached 10.43 million tonnes, up from 8.19 million tonnes in the same period last year, with Russia, China and Canada among Brazil’s top three suppliers, Cargonave data showed.
In recent days, analysts have warned that Western sanctions on Russia, a big seller of potash, ammonia, urea and other soil nutrients, are to reduce the availability of these fertilizers around the world.
