Santa Catarina banana exports increase by 58% in 2018

According to Santa Catarina State authorities, exports of bananas reached a 3-year high at 64,800 tons in 2018, up 58% compared to 2017. The year-on-year export revenues rose by 76% last year, to US$20.3m. Argentina and Uruguay are the main markets for bananas from Santa Catarina.
Santa Catarina is Brazil’s fourth largest banana producer. It has around 3,400 banana growers with over 28,000 hectares of planted area. The state’s estimated banana harvest is a total of 717,700 tons.

Brazil’s fruit and vegetable hub, the São Francisco Valley in Brazil’s northeast, saw its exports drop in 2018, especially for mangoes and grapes. Due to competition from European produce, sales fell between 10% and 30% in 2018 YoY.
