China’s sow herd has shrunk, says Agriculture Ministry
Apr, 29, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202218
China’s sow herd at the end of March shrunk by 3.3% from the previous month to 41.85 million head, according to data by the Agriculture Ministry disclosed on the 29th.
The count was down 3.1% from the previous year.
In terms of pigs, China had 422.53 million heads at the end of March, down 5.9% from the previous month, the data shows.
The hog herd has been shrinking in recent months due to low hog margins, although a recent rise in pork prices could prevent further declines.
Beijing has been stockpiling pork for its state reserves to sustain hog prices and margins.
