Brazilian papaya exports fell from in the period from January to April compared to 2021. According to the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex), the volume exported in these months was 14.4 thousand tonnes, down 18% from the same timeframe last year.

Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators reported that the national supply is not sufficient to meet external demand. Generally speaking, producers lacked enough papaya seeds and suffered from diminished crop areas caused by summer rains and quality issues that resulted from humidity and fewer crop treatments.

The countries that bought the most Brazilian papaya continue to be in the European Union: Portugal, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands with 62% of the total volume in the year so far. For the remainder of this year, producers are not expecting to see increased exports due to the reduced supply.

April alone was also characterized by a drop in papaya exports due to controlled supply and quality issues. The volume shipped from April/22 was only 3,500 tonnes, according to Secex, a drop of 3% compared to March/22 and 24% compared to April/21.
