Imported chemicals accounted for almost 12.1 million tonnes in the first four months of 2022, a volume 0.5% lower than that observed in the same period last year, informed the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim).
From January to April 2021, nearly US$ 22.8 billion were imported, and more than US$ 5.5 billion was exported in chemical products, resulting in increases of 48.7% and 35.6%, respectively.
As for the aggregate result in the last twelve months, from May 2021 to April 2022, the sector’s trade deficit reached US$ 52 billion, the highest value recorded on an annual basis. By the end of the year, this value may exceed US$ 55 billion.
According to Abiquim, exports in the period receded 4.9% from 5.4 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes. On the other hand, the exports of organic products increased by 7.2%, as did resins and elastomers by 25.5%.
In the same period, fertilizers moved around US$ 6.7 billion, and their intermediaries moved US$ 9.2 billion in transactions. Thus, up to April, they represented 40.2% of the export basket value, which means that increased imported chemicals boosted the trade deficit to the unprecedented value of US$ 17.3 billion, an increase of 53.5 % compared to 2021. There was an increase of 133.8% in the prices of fertilizers and their intermediates and 25.3% in pesticides.
