The agribusiness trade balance in São Paulo registered a surplus

The study of the trade balance of agribusiness firms in São Paulo by the Institute of Agriculture Economics (IEA-Apta) of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo showed a surplus of US$ 5.67 billion in the first four months of this year, up 33.7% compared to the same period in 2021 (US$ 4.24 billion).

Such performance results from a 26.1% increase in exports to US$ 7.30 billion, which offset the 5.2% increase in imports (to US$ 1.63 billion).

The G5 of exports

The five most important groups of products exported by agribusiness firms in São Paulo from January to April 2022 were: sugar and alcohol (US$ 1.82 billion, with sugar representing 85.1% and alcohol, 14.9% of the total); soybean complex (US$ 1.43 billion); meat (US$ 1.15 billion, with beef accounting for 86.8% of exports); forestry products (US$ 825.93 million, with a pulp share of 48.7% and a paper share of 41.8%); juices (US$ 527.12 million with orange juice representing 97.1% of the total).

These five aggregates accounted for 78.9% of foreign agribusiness sales in São Paulo. In turn, the coffee group, traditional in exports, appears in sixth place, with sales of US$ 368.27 million (75.2% referring to green coffee).

Imports

The main products on the São Paulo agribusiness import agenda were: salmon (US$ 132.90 million), wheat (US$ 110.38 million), paper (US$ 109.13 million), and palm oil (US$ 97.18 million). The ten main products represent 48.1% (US$ 785.15 million) of the total imported in 2022 (US$ 1.63 billion).

The share of São Paulo agribusiness exports was 36.7% of all São Paulo-based shipment operations, while the share of agribusiness imports was 6.9%. The agribusiness exports of São Paulo represented 15% of all Brazilian agribusiness operations.
