Over the past decade, the United States has become more dependent on Brazilian and Colombian coffee beans. Brazil and Colombia, which supplied 29% and 17% of all Arabica beans consumed in America in the 2011/12 market year, now account for 36% and 23%, respectively.

In the same period, the share of Mexican coffee beans dropped by half to 4%, and that of Central American suppliers dropped from 25% to 23%.

Americans are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world. According to the USDA, US imports of unroasted Arabica coffee increased by 3.3 million bags to 19.4 million bags between the 2011/12 and 2020/21 harvests.

On the other hand, imports of robusta beans declined in the same period. The volume of purchases fell by 2.6 million bags, reaching 3.5 million in the last cycle. Imports of unroasted decaf, whether arabica or robusta, fell by 100,000 bags to 1.5 million.
