Paraguay corn exports down 40% in the 2021 season

Corn exports from Paraguay fell 40% in the 2021 season. According to a report by the Paraguayan Grains and Oilseed Traders Association (Capeco), throughout the crop year, Paraguay shipped 1,525,925 tonnes. In contrast, in the previous harvest, 2,539,518 tonnes were exported, that is, a negative difference of 1,013,593 (40%).

In June, corn exports from the 2021 harvest (computed from May/2021 to June/2022) ended to make room for shipments from the 2022 campaign.

The decrease in corn exports from Paraguay compared to the previous harvest is attributable to a reduction in output owing to unfavorable weather conditions, planting season delays, and other factors that negatively impacted the crop.

Sonia Tomassone, Capeco’s Foreign Trade advisor, mentioned that the closing of roads and delays in the journey of trucks to Brazil caused by customs officer’s strikes complicated the situation further.

Regarding the calendar year, from January to June, Capeco indicated that Paraguay exported 446,274 tonnes of corn, a decrease of 419,594 tonnes (48.5%), compared to the 865,867 tonnes exported at the end of June 2021.
