For the 1st time, the Port of Imbituba is shipping wood pellets, a renewable energy source that will be exported to Europe, meeting the increased supply demand due to the war in Ukraine. In total, 16,500 tonnes of biofuel have been loaded since Tuesday (19) on the ship AGIA SOFIA, moored at Pier 3 and scheduled to undock this Friday (22), bound for the Port of Oristano, in Italy.

The wood pellets in this initial ship belong to four Santa Catarina exporters and two Paraná exporters, who want to send another vessel with similar cargo in October. Another group of exporters, also from the two southern states, plans to send two additional shipments to Europe by the end of the year.

Wood pellet operations by Serra Morena, which also stores the cargo in the port’s retro area, are expected to reach roughly 60 thousand tonnes in 2022. In addition, Imbituba is planning ten bulk shipments in 2023.

AGIA SOFIA is under the shipping agency of the company Orion.
