Fertilizers: European Commission proposes temporarily abolishing customs duties
Jul, 25, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202230
The European Commission proposed temporarily suspending customs duties on inputs used to produce nitrogen-based fertilizers until the end of 2024. The aim is to reduce costs for fertilizer manufacturers and farmers in the European Union.
According to a statement issued by the Commission, Russia is the second largest supplier of inputs and fertilizers to the region. “In 2021, the European Union imported 2.9 million tonnes of ammonia and 4.7 million tonnes of urea for the production of nitrogen fertilizers,” the statement said.
In addition to reducing fertilizer prices for farmers, the proposal also aims to diversify supply, with imports from other countries, excluding Russia and Belarus, due to the sanctions imposed by the European Union over the war against Ukraine. Member states will discuss the proposal before it goes into force.
