The Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz) will argue for reducing trade barriers in the trade of cereal commodities at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The group will participate on Thursday, Sep. 29,  in the WTO Public Panel, in Geneva and defend that Brazil’s high-quality production is enough to help alleviate global hunger.

See below the track record of the volume of Brazilian exports of rice (HS 1006) between January 2019 and Jul 2022. The data is from DataLiner.

The WTO Forum will take place between the 27th and 30th, with the theme “Towards a sustainable and inclusive recovery: ambition to action.” According to the UN, around 193 million people face severe food insecurity, 40 million more than in 2020.

“Several factors contribute to food insecurity, one of which is global trade. The WTO panel will discuss how promoting food security through trade can help. And Abiarroz will emphasize that overcoming global food insecurity demands not only the supply of goods like rice but also greater market access, which entails lowering trade barriers, according to a note from the organization’s executive director, Andressa Silva.

“We need to promote Brazilian rice and make sure that Brazil produces enough supplies for both domestic consumption and exportable surpluses,” she said, citing restrictions on Indian rice exports and high prices practiced in Thailand and Vietnam.
