The Kenford dredger arrived at the port of Cabedelo, in the João Pessoa metropolitan region, on the morning of October 13th. The vessel will dredge the port’s access channel and maneuvering basin.
Eighty-two meters long and 14 meters wide, the Kenford will play a vital role in the dredging of the port, which will make the depth of the access channel go from the current 9.14 meters to 11 meters. This increases the cargo throughput by about 57%.
The dredging process through which the Port of Cabedelo will pass consists of widening the access channel by excavating material from the seabed. After berthing at the port, the dredge began mapping the access channel and maneuvering the basin.
“The last dredging work occurred 12 years ago, and we are writing an avant-garde part in the history of our port,” said Gilmara Temóteo, CEO of port authority Companhia Docas da Paraíba.
The Government of Paraíba invested about R$ 85 million in the project and following the completion of the first stage, which involves the arrival of equipment like the dredger itself, in addition to ferries, cargo barges, and bottom levelers, the Navy of Brazil will be called upon to authorize the start of works effectively.
