With 335 meters long and 51.5 meters wide, the vessel Rio de Janeiro Express, owned by Hapag Lloyd, docked at the Port of Navegantes (Portonave) on Saturday (29). In terms of capacity, it is the largest container ship operating on the east coast of South America.
The vessel has a capacity of 13,278 TEUs and 2,220 reefer sockets, which allows for greater movement of reefer containers used to store refrigerated cargo, such as frozen meat and its derivatives, fruits, beverages, and others.
The Rio de Janeiro Express marked the beginning of a series of 50 experimental entry and exit maneuvers with ships 51 meters wide, 335 meters long, and an 11.2 meters draft in the Maneuvering Basin, as authorized by the Navy on October 20th.
For the Operational Manager, Emanuel Silveira Jorge, “this is another step towards the constant development of the Port Complex of Itajaí and Navegantes. This emphasizes the importance of the role of the Maritime Authority, Port Authority, and Pilotage Service, which contributed a lot to this achievement.”
The ship is part of the AS2 line and travels through Asia in countries such as China, South Korea and Hong Kong. The Rio de Janeiro Express will call at Portonave again in November.
Maneuvering Basin
Currently, ships 350 meters long and 48 meters wide can be maneuvered at the Navegantes and Itaja Port Complex, but the goal is to expand this capacity to vessels up to 400 meters long and 59 meters wide in the future.
Longest vessel
In 2020, Portonave received the largest ship in terms of length, the APL Paris, from the owner CMA/CGM, with 347 meters in length and 45.2 meters in width (beam) and a capacity of 10,789 TEUs.
