Port of Paranaguá Registers Highest Daily Shipping Volume of 2023

The Port of Paranaguá, located in Brazil, recorded its highest daily shipping volume of 2023 this week. Approximately 117,798 tonnes of soybeans and soymeal were loaded in a single day, exclusively at the port’s East Export Corridor. This milestone was achieved on April 12th, and expectations of high volumes continue throughout the second quarter.

Terminals and operators that utilize the complex and the other berths to the west of the port in Paraná state aim to export 8,326,500 metric tonnes of bulk solids from April to June. If achieved, this volume would be 38.8% higher than the first quarter of 2023, which saw 5,999,490  tonnes shipped.

“This year, our focus has been on improving productivity rates with terminals and port operators,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná. “In conjunction with the entire port community, we have been optimizing our operational times, nearly eliminating berth idleness,” he explained.

According to Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations, there is a growing demand for Brazilian soybeans, and the performance of the ports in Paraná state demonstrates their preparedness to ensure successful exportation of the 2022/2023 crop.

“We concluded the first quarter by showing that we are prepared for the expected increase in foreign market demand,” he said. “When we had availability, we operated with great efficiency and quality, which has generated reliability in our structures and capacity,” he concluded.

Products – According to expectations from operators of solid bulk exports, the projected volume of soybeans for shipment in the second quarter of this year is 5,502,500 metric tonnes. Additionally, 1,397,000 metric tonnes of soybean meal and 1,395,000 metric tonnes of sugar are expected to be loaded. The anticipated quantity of corn is considered small – 32,000 metric tonnes.

First quarter – In the first quarter of the year, 5,999,490 tonnes of solid bulk cargo was shipped through the East and West Export Corridors of the Port of Paranaguá. This volume was 7% higher than the first quarter of 2022, which saw 5,617,605  tonnes shipped. In January, 1,663,632 metric tonnes were loaded. In February, 1,881,506 metric tonnes were loaded onboard ships (+13.10% compared to the previous month), and in March, 2,439,348  tonnes were exported (an increase of 29.65%).

From January to March, the largest cargo volume handled was soybeans, totaling 2,103,566  tonnes. Corn came next with 1,914,439 tonnes, followed by soymeal with 1,432,325 tonnes. In addition, a total of 503,515 metric tonnes of sugar were loaded in bulk.

A small volume of wheat, totaling 45,644 metric tonnes, was loaded through the complex in the first quarter.
