Data prepared by the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) indicate that 48.74 million pairs were shipped abroad in the first four months of the year, generating US$ 440.2 million, a drop of 9.3% in volume and a high of 1.3% in revenue, when compared to the same period last year.
Considering only the exports of April, 10.3 million pairs were exported for US$ 111.76 million, a drop both in volume (-20.7%) and in revenue (-2%) in relation to the corresponding month of 2022.
The executive president of Abicalçados, Haroldo Ferreira, evaluates that the decrease in American imports, in general, has been impacting the national footwear industry, with the United States as the main destination of its shipments. “There is a slowdown in the North American economy. In the first quarter, US footwear imports, in general, fell 26%. The local retailers sold less than expected and are readjusting their stocks”, comments Haroldo.
In the first four months of the year, 3.84 million pairs were shipped, which generated US$ 75 million, representing drops both in volume (-55%) and in revenue (-37%) in relation to the same period last year.
Latin America
On the other hand, the executive from Abicalçados evaluates positively the performance of footwear exports to Latin American countries. In the four-month period, the exports for these destinations reached US$ 206 million, 21.4% more than in the same period of last year.
The main destination of footwear exports in the four-month period was Argentina. Between January and April, 4.96 million pairs were shipped there, which generated US$ 82.53 million, a drop of 8.2% in volume and a high of 43.7% in revenue compared to the same period in 2022.
Imports on the rise
Shoe imports are still on the rise in Brazil. In the same four-month period, 12.5 million pairs entered the country for US$ 145.56 million, an increase both in pairs (+3.4%) and in revenue (+20%) over the same period last year.
The main origins of imports continue to be the Asian countries: Vietnam, with 3.16 million pairs and US$ 71.76 million, highs of 19.4% and 31%, compared to the same period of 2022; Indonesia, with 1.16 million pairs and US$ 23.64 million, highs of 12.2% and 10.2%; and China, with 6.9 million pairs and US$ 20.12 million, decreases of 0.3% and 8.3%.
