Last Friday, May 9th, Fernando Jordão, the Mayor of Angra dos Reis, along with his secretariat and State Representative Célia Jordão, met representatives from various port-related unions at the Civil Defense headquarters. The meeting focused on concerns regarding the port’s fate, as its concession agreement is set to expire in December 2023, and the dwindling cargo volume at the port.
“We had a meeting last week with the operator, where they informed us that Docas was unwilling to renew the lease of the Port of Angra. We are very concerned. The concession ends this December. The situation is dire for the port workers and their families, but we have found full support from the City Hall, and I am confident we will emerge victorious. We already have another meeting scheduled to start seeking a solution,” explained Daniel Leal de Santana, President of the Stevedores Union.
According to government sources, another meeting is scheduled for this week to outline the work on the alternative options that will be presented. The low cargo movement at the port, which also worries the port workers, was another issue discussed in the meeting.
“We formed a committee and will work together to ensure that we can boost cargo operations at the Port of Angra dos Reis. My father always said: when the port thrives, money circulates in the city, and the city thrives. We will seek the unity of the City Hall with the workers, the State Government and the Federal Government to bring peace of mind to the port community,” said Mayor Fernando Jordão.

The port activity is paramount to the municipality’s economy and a significant source of employment. One of the initiatives by the City Hall to ensure the diversification of cargo and attract new companies to operate at the port while preserving jobs was reducing the ISS (Tax on Services) from 5% to 2%. The government’s current concern is the expiration of the concession at the end of this year.
“We are working and will do everything possible to advance and support this economic activity, which is vital for our municipality,” emphasized Cláudio Ferreti, Secretary of Government and Institutional Relations.
