The Captaincy of the Port of Progreso, subordinated to the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) of Mexico, informed through the nautical alert report nº 004/2023 that the ro-ro ship Grande Senegal -of the shipping company Grimaldi Lines- ran aground on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, in the State of Yucatán, specifically in the reef area called “Bajo de Madagascar”.
The Mexican authorities were notified of the incident on July 23 at 5:00 pm (local time) and made the event public on Monday, the 24th.
The statement, signed by the captain of the frigate Luis Hermann González Carrete, head of navigation for the Federal Branch, noted that “the state of the crew is unknown.”
In turn, the authorities of the Government of Mexico did not notify any type of inspection to assess possible damage to the vessel and/or environmental damage.
Meanwhile, the MarineTraffic website still lists the ship registered under the Italian flag as stranded. The ship, 210 meters long and 32 meters wide, left Altamira (Mexico) bound for Brunswick (United States).
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the MaritimeBulletin reported that the Grande Senegal would be accompanied by an offshore tug, which would be working on the release of the freighter.
