In October, Itaqui Port, located in Maranhão, reached its highest cargo throughput in history, totaling 3.658 million tonnes. This result represents a 16% increase compared to the same month in 2022 and is 19% higher than the planned amount for October 2023.

The movement of pulp (30% above plan), soybeans (61% above goal), and corn (18% above plan) were the main highlights of the month. Furthermore, the port achieved its highest monthly volume of solid bulk cargo handled at 2.832 million tonnes. Over 31.2 million tonnes were handled from January to October, representing a 7% increase over the same period the previous year.

Gilberto Lins, President of Itaqui Port, celebrated this achievement, saying, “This growth is the result of the joint efforts of EMAP with port operators and investors who believe in the state of Maranhão. We are working to establish Itaqui Port as one of the most important logistics hubs in the region and the country. We have modern and efficient infrastructure that allows us to handle large volumes of goods safely and swiftly.”

He also pointed out that “the growth in the cargo throughput of Itaqui Port is a reflection of the recovery of the Brazilian economy and the consolidation of Maranhão as an important hub for agricultural commodities, mainly due to the government’s efforts in attracting investments.” According to the National Supply Company (Conab), in the past harvests of 2022 and 2023, Maranhão is among the top 10 states with the highest grain production in the country, and it serves as a crucial connection to the Arco Norte region.

Itaqui Port has established itself as one of the most important public ports in the North and Northeast of Brazil, thanks to various factors. Its strategic location plays a pivotal role, allowing the port to serve a vast area that includes the states of the North, Northeast, and Midwest. Its modern and efficient infrastructure enables the safe and swift transport of large cargo volumes. Itaqui Port can accommodate large vessels with nine docking berths ranging in depth from 12 to 19 meters.

One of Itaqui’s major advantages is its multimodal integration, as it is connected to important railway and highway networks. This interconnection significantly facilitates the transportation of goods between the port and the country’s interior, thereby expanding its ability to serve a wide range of customers.
