Week 202344

The volume of sugar destined for exports in Brazil remains substantial, with 114 ships awaiting loading until the week ended November 22, according to a survey by the maritime agency Williams Brasil. This figure, although slightly lower than the 117 ships from the previous week, represents a loading schedule of 5.164 million tons of sugar compared to 5.542 million tons in the preceding week.

The Port of Santos in São Paulo leads the exports with 3.821 million tonnes, followed by the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná with 964,190 tons. Other ports such as Maceió, São Sebastião, Recife, Suape, and Natal also contribute to this significant volume of exports.

The chart below shows the sugar (HS 1701) volume, measured in tonnes, exported from the Port of Santos between Jan 2019 and Sep 2023.

The diversity of sugar types to be exported includes VHP (4.944 million tons), TBI (122,100 tons), Refined A-45 (38,000 tons), and VHP in bags (equivalent to 60,000 tons). The agency’s report considers vessels anchored, those waiting, and those scheduled to arrive by January 19.

Furthermore, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reduced its estimates for global sugar production in the 2023/24 season, projecting an increase to 183.461 million tons compared to 175.307 million tons in 2022/23, representing a growth of 4.65%. The USDA’s semi-annual report forecasts a surplus of 5.03 million tons in 2023/24, reversing the deficit of 1.073 million tons in 2022/23.

The USDA projection highlights that unexpected growth in production from Brazil and India is expected to offset predictions of declines in crops from Thailand and Pakistan in 2023/24. The international sugar market continues to face complex dynamics, with the numbers indicating a landscape of changes in the global scenario for the coming year.
