ADM, one of the world’s largest agribusiness companies, has announced the expansion of three oilseed crushing facilities, adding 400,000 tonnes of crushing capacity per year. The plants are located in Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul), Porto Franco (Maranhão) and Uberlândia (Minas Gerais).

According to Luciano Botelho, president of ADM’s oilseeds business in South America, the expansion is designed to meet growing domestic and export demand for crush by-products: “Our facilities are strategically located throughout the country, and it is part of this plan to make investments that will consolidate ADM’s position in the crush market and ensure that we continue to be at the forefront of growth in Brazil,” he said in a statement.

The company did not disclose the value of the investments.

ADM recently completed the acquisition of a majority stake in Buckminster Química, a refined glycerin producer based in Macatuba, São Paulo.

According to Mr. Botelho, the acquisition reinforces the company’s strategy in the country. “Sustainability is one of the global demand trends that is driving growth opportunities for ADM.”

Refined glycerin of biological origin has a wide range of uses as an ingredient in industrial and consumer products, Mr. Botelho said. And the purchase of Buckminster—which was already a supplier to ADM—is another way for the company to broaden its portfolio and expand its capabilities “to meet customers’ growing needs for sustainably sourced products in food, feed, fuel, industrial and consumer products.”
