Argentina hopeful of good cotton harvest this year

According to Argentina’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, which tracks the country’s crops weekly, cotton planting has reached 94% of the projected total. The cotton crop is expected to cover approximately 610,000 hectares of land, representing a 15.1% increase compared to the previous season (530 hectares).

Production was projected to be 900,000 tonnes for the 2022–2023 season, while it is anticipated that the 2023–2024 season will yield more results because of the increased acreage and ideal growing weather.

Currently, Argentina’s cotton fields are in bloom, with some areas already bearing fruits. The soil across all areas has good moisture levels, and the forecast for the next quarter indicates temperatures slightly above average, with rainfall within the normal range.

In other words, there will be sufficient moisture and warmth for the crop’s sound development, contributing to good productivity. The only potential risk lies in the rains forecast for the harvesting period, which could compromise the quality of the cotton fiber and pose challenges for phytosanitary control to prevent the spread of pest infestations.
