The modernization project of the Port of Paranaguá will receive a significant boost of 495 million Brazilian reais in financing from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). The project’s total cost is budgeted at 647 million Brazilian reais. This investment aligns with the bank’s strategic focus on bolstering the maritime market.

According to BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante, this initiative is a key component of the BNDES Azul [Blue BNDES] project, aimed at supporting various aspects of the maritime economy, particularly infrastructure development.

“This recently approved modernization project for the Port of Paranagua aims not only to enhance operational efficiency but also to mitigate Port-City friction. Traffic adjustments should reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 70% in the port area,” Mercadante explains.

The project’s objectives include the integration of rail, road, and maritime transportation to streamline grain logistics and alleviate truck congestion. Current plans involve reducing the number of railroad crossings that trucks pass through from sixteen to just five. Furthermore, by leveraging rail infrastructure, the port’s grain reception capacity could increase more than threefold, reducing reliance on trucks, which are currently responsible for 80% of port-bound freight.

BNDES has a comprehensive program dedicated to the “blue” economy, totaling approximately 22 billion reais. Of this amount, 13.6 billion reais are earmarked for projects related to dry docks, support vessels, shipyards, and oil tankers. Additionally, 7.7 billion reais are allocated to various initiatives, including maritime transport, port development, terminal expansions, and vessel upgrades. The bank also supports investments in coastal tourism and mangrove ecosystem restoration.
