Port of Paranagua Classification Yard Gains New Concrete Paving

Portos do Paraná concluded on Thursday (29) all pavement recovery works at the truck access to the cargo classification yard. The asphalt layer was replaced by concrete to improve access and safety, reducing the risk of potholes and eventual closures. These works are part of a $6 million maintenance contract the public company signed for 12 months.
“This road maintenance contract, recently concluded in the Cargo Classification Yard, extends its scope to encompass the broader port area and access routes. Our efforts this month involved two dedicated teams: one focusing on the port area, finalizing the paving of the former AZ10 site, which underwent demolition, while the Cargo Classification Yard team executed comprehensive maintenance on the access road and sorting lane,” explained Matheus Arnoni Mendes, the Inspection Coordinator.
He emphasized that the upgrade aimed to replace aging asphalt with a more robust and enduring material. “The decision to transition from asphalt to concrete pavement was strategic, particularly for the access road to the Cargo Classification Yard. The transition involved the removal of the existing asphalt layer, followed by the installation of rigid pavement specifically engineered to withstand heavy traffic,” clarified the engineer.
Mendes further highlighted that the adjustments targeted areas prone to heavy vehicle traffic, particularly trucks arriving for unloading at the Port of Paranaguá.
Regarding the benefits of the new pavement, Mendes assured that durability would be a standout feature. “The longevity of concrete pavement surpasses that of traditional asphalt, offering enhanced durability and resilience against heavy loads. Additionally, its installation contributes to smoother surfaces, minimizing common defects such as unevenness and potholes. When properly executed, concrete pavement can boast a lifespan of up to 20 years,” he concluded.
