TCP Surpasses Half-Million TEUs Milestone Over a Month Ahead of 2023 Schedule

On April 28, 2024, TCP, the company in charge of managing the Paranaguá Container Terminal, reached the landmark of 500,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) 42 days earlier than in 2023. Last year, this milestone was achieved on June 9.

In addition to surpassing half a million TEUs, TCP broke three other productivity records in the same month. One notable achievement was the second consecutive monthly high in container throughput, reaching 135,678 TEUs and surpassing the 133,083 TEUs recorded in March.

In the first four months of this year, TCP handled 509,230 TEUs, marking a 38% increase compared to 368,720 TEUs in the same period in 2023. According to Giovanni Guidolim, TCP’s commercial, logistics, and service manager, “The acquisition of new equipment, expanding the machinery fleet to 40 RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes) and 69 TTs (terminal tractors), as well as the completion of the renovation work on the gates (road access routes to the terminal), show that the recent investments to improve the terminal’s operational capacity are already yielding results, both in terms of increased volume handled and the attraction of new customers from various states across the country.”

Among the commercial segments that saw the most growth in the first four months of the year were meat and frozen food exports, and agribusiness commodities such as wood, paper, and cellulose. In terms of imports, notable growth was observed in goods from the automotive, electronics, and chemicals sectors.

TCP also set two new operational records at the gate in April. The first was the number of monthly transactions, reaching 54,984 containers, an 11% increase from the 49,517 containers handled in November 2023.

The second record was for daily transactions: the terminal achieved three new all-time highs in container handling through the access gates to the operations yard, with 2,461, 2,440, and 2,379 containers processed on April 17, 23, and 24, respectively.

According to TCP’s operations planning manager, Felipe de França, “The completion of our gate refurbishment in April has brought greater efficiency, agility, safety, and automation for our customers, especially truck drivers.” The new structure improves vehicle access flow by 200%, increasing the hourly entry appointment capacity from 50 to 150.

“Just as we reached the half-million mark more than a month ahead of schedule, our expectation is that performance will continue at this pace throughout 2024, enabling us to achieve the milestone of handling 1 million TEUs earlier this year,” says Guidolim.
