Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced the first port auction of 2024, set to take place in August, during a technical visit to Recife. The auction, held at B3 in São Paulo, will include three port areas with a total investment of approximately R$60 million. The areas to be auctioned are:
REC08: Vegetable Solid Bulk (Malt, Wheat, Corn)
REC09: General Cargo and Solid Bulk (Rice)
REC10: General Cargo and Solid Bulk (Soda Ash)
The visit to the Port of Recife aimed to inspect the areas up for auction and review the port authority’s investment plan. The Port of Recife reported a 43% increase in cargo throughput in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2023.
“We have already secured R$120 million for dredging the Port of Recife, which will enhance our draft and competitiveness. In August, we will auction three terminals with investments totaling around R$60 million, along with additional infrastructure projects,” Costa Filho announced.
Costa Filho emphasized that these improvements are part of broader efforts to boost the economy and create jobs, a collaborative initiative with state and federal governments. “This represents the largest investment in the city’s port in the last 20 years,” he stated, noting the anticipated bidding process in September.
Delmiro Gouveia, President of the Port of Recife, highlighted the significance of these concessions in enhancing port services, such as river dredging, which will allow larger ships to dock and enhance local tourism. “Improving the external channel and arrival processes for ships will attract new cargo and commercial routes,” he explained.
Pernambuco’s Vice-Governor, Priscila Krause, noted that the Port of Recife had already seen a 43% increase in cargo throughput last year. “With the auction of these three terminals, we expect a further increase in port activity, at around 25% to 30%. The port is retaking its crucial role in the state’s economic development,” she emphasized.
Dredging and Infrastructure Development
The dredging project for the port’s channels and infrastructure, valued at R$120 million, includes R$30 million allocated from the PAC Leilões 2024. This project is essential for enhancing the port’s capacity and efficiency, ensuring it can handle increased traffic and larger vessels.
