Navy marines will no longer patrol the Port of Santos. The deployment of Armed Forces personnel to ensure law and order in ports and airports in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo was terminated this Tuesday (4) by the Federal Government.
The measure had been in force since November 6 last year and involves a contingent of 3,700 military personnel working against organized crime. As the original deadline was six months, it would end on May 3, but it was extended by one month.
The Federal Government’s main objective when enacting the measure, in November (decree nº 11,765), was to guarantee “the preservation of public order.”
In addition to the Navy, Army, and Air Force, the National Security Force, the Federal Police (PF), the Federal Highway Police (PRF), and the Federal Revenue also participated in security enhancement actions.
“The Federal Government will continue to support the integrated action of Brazil’s security forces against organized crime. In the assessment of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the knowledge generated and the intelligence actions developed and improved represent a legacy to public security in the country and, in particular, to Brazilian citizens,” said the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, in a statement.
According to the information released, between November 1, 2023, and June 3, 2024, 279.8 tonnes of drugs were seized in the operation, including 20.5 tonnes of cocaine and 18.1 tonnes of cocaine-based paste, 317 weapons, 32 rifles, and 11,800 rounds of ammunition, including 10 grenades. In addition, 3,826 people were arrested, 505,700 vehicles were searched, and 11,900 boat inspections were carried out. The data pertains to the country-wide operation, as specific numbers for the Port of Santos were not disclosed.
