In the first five months of 2024, the Port of São Francisco do Sul recorded a cargo throughput of 7.3 million tonnes, marking a 16% increase from the same period last year at around 6.3 million tonnes. This growth continues a five-month streak of rising cargo volumes.

In May alone, the largest port in Santa Catarina handled 1.4 million tonnes, up 200,000 tonnes from May 2023, representing a 13% increase.

The port authority’s latest report revealed that exports reached 790,000 tonnes, primarily driven by 750,000 tonnes of soybean shipments, and by 18,000 tonnes of wood shipped to the United States.

In May, imports at São Francisco totaled 607,000 tonnes. Steelmaking products, such as steel coils and sheets, accounted for 375,000 tonnes, while fertilizers from abroad totaled 166,000 tonnes.

Port President Cleverton Vieira praised the sustained growth seen in 2024. “The numbers show that São Francisco is solidifying its role as a vital passageway for cargo not only from Santa Catarina but also from other states”. He also noted that the terminal set a historic throughput record of 16.8 million tonnes last year. “Together with the other terminals in Babitonga Bay, the Port Complex demonstrates its competitive edge, offering unique logistical conditions, efficiency, and sustainability.”
