After a year and a half, the Port of Itajaí, located on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state, saw a container ship dock in its berths again on Sunday afternoon, July 7.

According to the port superintendence, the vessel brought 1,901 BYD brand vehicles in 600 containers, along with 13 buses and 66 boxes of fabrics. The cargo originated from Singapore and is destined for Vitória (Espírito Santo). The unloading operation took place on Monday (8).

Since 2023, after the previous service provider terminated its contract with Itajaí, the port had only been receiving general cargo, such as cars, cellulose pulp, and rebar.

The Star Lysefjord entered the port access channel around 5 p.m., following the departure maneuver of another general cargo ship.

The ship is expected to leave the port between Tuesday (9) and Wednesday (10).

💸 According to the superintendency, the Port of Itajaí handled more than 4 million tonnes of general and containerized cargo in 2022.

📉 In 2023, without containers, the volume plunged to 370,000 tons.

📉 In 2024, the volume is currently a little over 102,000 tonnes, resulting in an estimated loss of at least R$120 million.

Contract

A temporary concession contract made the operation possible. The company that won the bid at the end of 2023 transferred the service last month to JBS/Seara. The contract is valid for two years while the federal government prepares the definitive lease notice.

The company committed to a throughput of 44,000 containers per month, according to the contract terms.

The Port of Itajaí is public, under federal government responsibility, and managed by the municipality. The operation is partly public and partly private.
