In a historic milestone for the development of Maranhão, the Port of Itaqui commenced work on Berth 98 on Wednesday morning (24). The first metal pile of the new berth was fixed into place, symbolizing the start of a project that will significantly expand the state’s export capacity.
With an investment of R$ 289 million, the new berth will feature a depth of up to 18 meters and dimensions of 320m x 40m, allowing large ships to dock. This expansion is expected to increase the port’s export capacity by more than 8 million tonnes annually, boosting annual revenue by around 20%.
“Berth 98 is a strategic project for the economic development of Maranhão through the Port of Itaqui. It will solidify our position as one of Brazil’s main ports and create new opportunities for local producers. We are committed to delivering this project on time, ensuring quality and efficiency at all stages,” said Gilberto Lins, President of Porto.
“Today, we drove the first metal pile into place using a vibrating hammer,” explained Ricardo Miranda, EMAP‘s Director of Engineering and Maintenance. “Next, we will position and drive the second pile, maintaining a rigorous and continuous work schedule until the project is complete.”
Berth 98 signifies a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the population of Maranhão. By expanding its cargo handling capacity, the Port of Itaqui aims to become a strategic logistics hub, connecting the state to global markets and driving economic growth for decades to come.
