Brazil Opens Market to Norwegian Seafood Exports

Norwegian seafood now has access to one of the largest markets on the planet.
Brazil and Norway have reached an agreement that will allow Norwegian seafood to enter Brazil. According to Norway’s Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), producers will be able to export wild fish, farmed fish, and fish by-products to Brazil if they are approved by the Brazilian authorities (DIPOA).
Brazil has a massive population and is considered one of the top destinations for Chilean salmon. With Norwegian products now in the mix, the country could see added interest in its staple seafood product.
Mattilsynet’s website explains the process of entering the Brazilian market and how potential exporters can be added to its list of approved producers.
Brazil does have special requirements for those exporting farmed seafood products that surpass Norway’s regulations.
“As an exporter, you must know the special requirements that the importing country places on the goods and the manufacturer, and you must ensure that these requirements are met before you export goods,” Mattilsynet stated on its website.
Mattilsynet noted that farmed seafood must meet the following special requirements for export:
– The animals used as raw material for processing the product were not slaughtered as a disease-fighting measure or as a result of a disease outbreak.
– The animals used as raw material for processing the product did not come from facilities subject to sanitary restrictions and showed no clinical signs of disease or ectoparasites.
– Frozen fish and fish products have not had phosphates or similar added before freezing.
