Valparaíso Port Boosts Operations with Eco-Friendly Reachstacker Cranes

Terminal Pacífico Sur Valparaíso (TPS) has upgraded its fleet of reachstacker cranes with the acquisition of five new units, replacing those that had reached the end of their operational lifespan. This modernization effort not only enhances TPS’s operations—concessionaire of Terminal 1 at the Port of Valparaíso—but also boosts efficiency and sustainability by incorporating eco-friendly equipment and advanced technology.

The five new Kalmar cranes, manufactured in Poland, are now fully operational at the terminal. They feature smaller, more efficient engines that reduce emissions and consume less fuel than previous models, all without sacrificing performance. Additionally, these units produce lower noise levels, contributing to a significant reduction in noise pollution.

Francisco González, Deputy Manager of Asset Management at TPS, highlighted the benefits: “These machines replace older units that had reached the end of their service life, making way for more technologically advanced and efficient equipment. With the ability to stack containers up to six high-cube containers in height, they can operate anywhere within the terminal. Our entire fleet of 11 reachstacker cranes is now standardized to this height, all from the Kalmar brand.”

To ensure safe and effective use, Kalmar provided both theoretical and practical training for reachstacker operators and maintenance technicians at the terminal, equipping them with in-depth knowledge of crane operation and upkeep.

Reachstacker cranes are crucial for lifting, stacking, and moving containers over short distances within the terminal. Their versatility and maneuverability make them ideal for working in confined spaces, offering a practical solution compared to fixed cranes or larger equipment.
